Harsher ram raid penalties start in Victoria

Several new retail crime laws announced by the Premier of Victoria have come into effect, strengthening protections for retailers and the public.

Among the legislative changes, vehicle ram-raids are now classified as aggravated burglary, carrying a maximum penalty of 25 years. The Shopping Centre Council of Australia (SCCA) has formally endorsed these reforms and expressed support for the measures introduced by the Victorian Government.

SCCA CEO Angus Nardi stated that the new laws equip Victoria Police with stronger tools to protect workers, customers, and the community.

“The Victorian Government’s strong new vehicle ram-raid law sends a clear signal that this dangerous and violent behaviour will not be tolerated, and that it has serious consequences”, he said.

“Vehicle ram-raiding is a frightening and dangerous crime that puts customers and workers in retail settings at risk and causes significant damage to property and businesses”.

These laws respond to the rise in abuse and violence within Victorian workplaces and reinforce protections for staff.
