10-Carat Pink Diamond Sells for $13M at Christie’

“The Eden Rose,” a fancy intense pink diamond weighing a little over 10 carats, appeared at auction for the first time Tuesday, headlining Christie’s “Magnificent Jewels” sale in New York. An unnamed buyer paid $13.3 million for the stone.

New York—“The Eden Rose,” a 10.20 carat fancy intense pink diamond, bloomed at Christie’s jewelry auction Tuesday, selling for $13.3 million, or $1.3 million per carat, exceeding its pre-sale estimate of $9 million to $12 million.

Named, according to Christie’s, after the symbol of unconditional love, “The Eden Rose” is an internally flawless, round brilliant-cut stone, an unusual cut for a natural color diamond.

The diamond is set into an 18-karat white gold ring with 18-karat rose gold prongs and is surrounded by a halo of pear brilliant-cut and marquise-cut diamonds weighing between 0.73 and 3.11 carats.

Tuesday’s “Magnificent Jewels” sale at Christie’s marked the first time “The Eden Rose” has been offered at auction. 

Christie’s said the diamond is the most significant IF, round brilliant, fancy intense pink to come to auction in more than a decade.

“The Eden Rose” was by far the top lot of the auction, which brought in $44.4 million, with 90 percent of the 144 lots offered finding buyers.

Natural color diamonds comprised four of the top five lots, with Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s international head of jewelry, noting that buyers paid strong prices for rare colored gemstones and natural pearls as well.

The jewelry auction’s second highest-grossing lot, behind “The Eden Rose,” was a platinum diamond pendant necklace featuring an 84.05-carat fancy intense yellow cushion modified brilliant-cut diamond.

A buyer paid $2.2 million for the piece, slightly above its highest pre-sale estimate of $2 million.

A platinum ring set with a 2-carat fancy vivid blue heart-shaped diamond surrounded by halos of yellow and white diamonds sold for $2.1 million, within its estimated range of $1.6 million to $2.6 million.

The sale’s fourth highest-grossing lot was a set of three yellow diamonds, one fancy intense yellow weighing 40.56 carats, one fancy yellow weighing 40.38 carats, and one fancy yellow weighing 26.63 carats.

The set sold for $1.7 million, the low end of what was expected ($1.6 million to $2.6 million).

Rounding out the auction’s top five was a pair of pendant earrings featuring I-color, oval brilliant-cut diamonds weighing 23.20 and 23.05 carats and set in platinum and 18-karat white gold.

The earrings sold for $1.4 million, at the high end of the pre-sale estimate of $1 million to $1.5 million.
