Springfield, Mass.—Smith & Son Jewelers’ store in Springfield, Massachusetts, is closing after 107 years in business.
The Smith & Son Jewelers in Enfield, Connecticut, will remain open.
Owner Andrew Smith has decided to retire, the company announced in a Facebook post, and will close the Springfield store.
Smith told the local news that he would like to spend more time with his family.
According to an archived version of the retailer’s website, Smith & Son Jewelers started as Kalman's Jewelry Store on Springfield’s Main Street in 1918.
The store closed for five years in the late-1950s through mid-1960s, reopening in 1964 with Sam Smith and his son, Fred Smith, a trained watchmaker, at the helm.
They renamed the store Smith & Son Jewelers.
Fred’s wife, Karlene, also joined the business, retiring in 2020. They had five children, all of whom have worked in the family business at some point.
The family business would continue, being passed onto Fred and Karlene’s son, Andrew, who trained as a jeweler and designer.
Andrew’s wife, Michele, joined the family business as well.
The store is hosting a going-out-of-business sale, with a VIP presale event for its longtime customers before opening the sale to the general public on Aug. 8.
Andrew told the local news that the closing was bittersweet, with customers lining up around the block for the sale.
An official closing timeline has not been set.
