Christie’s recent Magnificent Jewels auction made headlines when a Tiffany & Co. necklace featuring a 13.54-carat Paraíba tourmaline set two new auction records.
But for this cat-loving jewelry editor, that necklace wasn’t the only star of the show.
Sitting watchfully at Lot 62 was a Tiffany & Co. Jean Schlumberger colored gemstone and diamond “African Cat” brooch.
This 18-karat gold and platinum feline has yellow sapphire fur with purple sapphire spots, pear-shaped tsavorite garnet eyes, diamonds on his tail and ears, and gold whiskers.
He is for big cat lovers only; at 3 inches tall and 1 ½ inches wide, this kitty makes for a substantial pin, as seen on the model above.
Prior to the sale, Christie’s estimated the brooch would sell for between $40,000 and $60,000.
In the end, a buyer paid $101,600 for Schlumberger’s African Cat, but that should come as no surprise. This sweet guy is worth his weight in whiskers alone.
