Long Necklaces Are Back (and Better Than Ever)

Remember in the early 2000’s—somewhere between like 2004 and 2010—when long, large pendants were all the rage?

For me it was this long, turquoise-color strawberry pendant from Kenneth Jay Lane. I was in college at the time and it felt like a splurge, but I just had to have it. I wore that thing everywhere.

I don’t quite remember the way it happened but like many fashions, the long pendant made way for shorter necklaces, most of which were layered (some of them, especially in costume, were sold as multilayered, three-chains-in-one). And the strawberry didn’t get much airtime after that.

I wish I still had that pendant. As Bohemian style makes a comeback for 2025, long layering necklaces are back as well. For many jewelry consumers, shoppable finds might lean more on the demi-fine or costume side—especially with the skyrocketing price of gold—but there are plenty of fine jewels that suit this style. We also might see more necklaces with long leather or silk cords (to help limit the amount of gold used) paired with fine materials on the pendants.

No matter which way you find it, the long necklace is back, and it’s better than ever—though I’d still opt for that sweet strawberry to add to the neck party any day. See below for the latest.
