Lewis Heyman (pictured), co-president and head stone buyer for jewelry manufacturer Oscar Heyman, retired at the end of June. He had just marked his 28th anniversary working at the company.
After graduating from college in 1981, Heyman served in the Peace Corps and then earned a master’s from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. In 1997, he joined the business founded 85 years earlier by his grandfather Harry and great-uncles Oscar and Nathan.
The job meshed well with Heyman’s love of travel, and he frequently went overseas in search of high-quality gemstones. He is credited with forging relationships with gem cutters in Australia, Thailand, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Colombia, France, Germany, and Switzerland.
Heyman has been a member of numerous industry groups, including the 24 Karat Club of New York, the American Gem Society, and the American Gem Trade Association.
In a statement, company president Tom Heyman (Lewis’ brother) said he was “grateful for Lewis’ unwavering commitment to excellence and the connections he has developed with the most reliable and trustworthy gem dealers around the world.”
