Oscar Heyman’s Sphene Ring

For those looking to gift something equally unique and luxurious this year, Oscar Heyman has just the piece to wrap up.

The jeweler’s sphene ring features a cushion-cut yellow-green sphene surrounded by 18 baguette diamonds and 12 tapered baguette diamonds set in platinum and 22-karat yellow gold.

Gem-quality sphene in large sizes is rare, according to the International Gem Society, making this stone, weighing in at 11.69 carats, a special find.

“When we saw this sphene, we knew it would be a perfect center stone given the electric, saturated hue,” said Oscar Heyman’s President Tom Heyman, who added, “It deserved to be the hero.”

Sphene brings brilliance and fire to the piece, as it has one of the highest dispersions of any material at 0.051. For comparison, a diamond’s dispersion is 0.044.

Sphene is also pleochroic, meaning the gemstone shows more than one color depending on the angle it is viewed from.

In this piece, its hues range from acid to light green with touches of yellow when the light hits it.

The jeweler said the sphene’s square shape with rounded edges blends classic elegance with a modern touch, making it a perfect example of the modern heirlooms that Oscar Heyman is known for.

“The rounded edges of the cushion cut juxtaposes nicely with the straight lines of the baguettes, so the pairing felt natural. As far as color, we are always looking for stones that capture attention,” said Tom Heyman.

The sphene ring debuted at Couture in June and retails for $80,000.
